Abstract

Objective: To assess the mental health of dentistry students at a private higher education institution during the Covid-19 pandemic. Method: The present study is a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical research, carried out with 109 academics from the Dentistry course at the Centro Universitario FIPMoc – UNIFIPMoc, who performed clinical care at the Nucleus for Health Care and Professional Practices (NASPP). A questionnaire with the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used to assess symptoms of mental disorders and the Covid-19 Fear Scale (EMC-19). Results: Of the total participants, 68.80% were female, 30.20% male and 29.4% tested positive for Covid-19. The overall prevalence was 46.8% for anxiety, 41.3% for depression and 47.7% for stress. A significant association was observed for the variables age group under 21 years old and positive diagnosis for covid-19 with mental disorders and fear of Covid-19 was associated with the diagnosis of Covid-19 and symptoms of mental disorders. Conclusions: During the Covid-19 pandemic period, a high level of fear, anxiety, stress and depression was observed among dental students, showing the importance of mental health promotion measures in higher education institutions.
