Volleyball is a widely practiced sport and due to the demands imposed, it exposes players to a risk of musculoskeletal injuries, among the most common of which is ankle sprains. Considering the costs arising from the occurrence of ankle sprains in volleyball players, it is necessary to verify the results of physical exercise programs when approaching athletes in this sport. The present study aims to review the main findings regarding the effects of physical exercise in preventing ankle sprains in volleyball players. This is a systematic review that brought together scientific articles from the electronic databases PubMed/Medline; Scopus; ISI Web of Science. The articles chosen were in English. The descriptors used included “ankle sprain”, “exercise” and “volleyball”. To be included in the study, randomized clinical trials and cohort studies were considered that addressed the effects of physical exercise programs in preventing ankle sprains in volleyball in athletes of both sexes, without date restrictions. Titles and abstracts were analyzed and duplicate records were excluded. After reading the selected articles in full, studies that did not present the results in full and that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded. The assessment of the methodological quality of the selected studies was conducted using the PEDro Scale and the NOS scale. 114 articles were found. By analyzing titles and abstracts, 107 articles were excluded, leaving 7 articles. Of these, 2 duplicate records were excluded. After reading in full, 3 studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded. Thus, 2 articles were selected. The selected studies showed positive effects of exercise in preventing ankle sprains in volleyball athletes. The interventions proposed by the selected studies were proprioceptive training, neuromuscular training, technical training and awareness training. It is concluded that, although there are few studies related to the topic, there is evidence of a reduction in the incidence of ankle sprains in volleyball athletes through different types of exercise programs.
