Echoes of other Africas: residential catholic saint festivities in the Americas

Resumo

O trabalho visa reimaginar o legado africano nas Américas. Em particular, o foco do texto são as festas domiciliares de santos católicos que as pessoas celebram hoje em alguns países específicos da América: Venezuela, Brasil, Colômbia, Equador e República Dominicana. De forma significativa, as celebrações musicais para os santos católicos que se realizam em casas particulares nestas várias localidades da América são bastante parecidas em termos tanto cosmológicos como estéticos. Isso se deve, em grande parte, a uma matriz comum não só na Ibéria como também na África Central, pois, ao comparar as dimensões musicais, estruturais, sociais e cosmológicas destas festas americanas numa perspectiva histórica, percebemos que seriam evidentes frutos da contribuição centro-africana às Américas, e especialmente do catolicismo centro-africano que começou a se desenvolver desde o século XV. Ainda, o texto procura avançar –– de modo implícito –– um argumento metodológico-teórico de que as práticas musicais têm uma historicidade que deixa com que o seu estudo (especialmente quando comparativo e historicizado) possa fazer ressoar vozes e narrativas esquecidas e silenciadas.
