This study proposes the translation into Portuguese of Chapter “VI” from the book Vues (1999 [1948]) by Paul Valéry. The chapter is divided into four parts: “L’homme et l’action,” “Sur le suicide”, “Le vouloir être un autre” and “Lettre à quelqu’un”. The collection, still unpublished in translation, stands out for its profound and sensitive approach in essays where Valéry investigates the duality of human experience, navigating between the mind's relentless pursuit of ideas and the trap of words, and a mind open to the unforeseen. In his reflections, Valéry conveys an uneasiness that often culminates in a sense of awe before the ineffable, acknowledging that both words and human behaviors are merely shadows of what escapes expression.
